Healthy Shopping in the Supermarket

The order in which you go about the super market determines to a great extent the nutritional quality of the food you take home. Since we tend to do things quickly and with the least possible effort, we are more likely to visit the central aisles, those that are closest to the store entrance.

Supermarkets are experts in consumer psychology and they know we don’t like to move much. Since their main goal is to maximize returns, they place the most profitable products, especially those appealing to children, precisely where there is more traffic. Which are the most profitable foods for a store?

  1. Those with highest margins and prices
  2. Products placed by companies that pay supermarkets for good location
  3. Products that advertise aggressively on television

What do these three types of products have in common? With few exceptions, they are all junk foods or very low nutritional-value foods. Here is where you will find all kinds of chips, cookies, cereals, cold cuts, frozen foods, soft drinks, breads, frozen foods, school lunches, etc. None of these will make your children grow healthy or contribute to keep your health.

Where should be shop? In the store periphery, in the farthest aisles. “Strangely”, these are the aisles where you will find the healthy foods that do not advertise on television: fruits, vegetables, fresh meats and fish. If we fill our carts with these healthy foods, there will be little room for the tempting foods we find in the central aisles and which are full of sugars, salt, additives and unhealthy fats.
